DESCRIPTION:
APW - Ball Hampden, "Ball's Standard Superior Grade" marked mvt, 17J, 18S, silver OF recase with nickel cuvette, "Webb C. Ball, Cleveland O" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, s#759621. A scarce watch; Ball Hampden movements come with signatures including "Ball's Standard Superior Grade," "Ball's Standard High Grade," and simply "Ball's Standard."
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticking somewhat sluggishly, overhaul recommended, partial disassembly reveals a small piece of tissue inserted under the balance cock presumably to adjust for imperfect balance end shake, correctly corresponding serial numbers of 59621 to underside of balance cock and 621 to underside of balance wheel spar (arm), no serial number to underside of barrel bridge which is correct and typical to examples of this Ball Hampden marking we have observed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and small surface spots, a number of screw heads with gilt loss; dial with numerous scattered hls, some mild fine scratches, small fractures tight along perimeter at 8:30; case shows little wear, a moderate patina, some scratches to cuvette from past slipped openings, small but deep ding to band at 10, no dents; tight bow, crown shows little wear; glass crystal with edge chips at 7 and lesser edge flakes at 12.
